Know what information you have, restore only the information you need

Tape Cataloging

Does your organization know what information is on all of its backup tapes? Can your IT group restore critical data from them within a few days for an eDiscovery or compliance audit? With the December 2006 amendment to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) Rule 26b Section 2b, chances are information on those tapes can no longer be claimed "not reasonably accessible because of undue burden or cost." For most organizations, restoring data from backup media is an extremely expensive and time-consuming process that becomes a significant burden on IT resources, especially when the volume of information is large needs to be turned around quickly. Just to gain access to information on backup media, IT must recreate the technical environment—including the same email system, hardware configuration, and version of backup software-that was used in the original backup process. Your IT department simply may not possess the capabilities required to restore such data.

The ZANTAZ Media Cataloging service provides a snapshot of what data is available to discovery prior to any media restoration. ZANTAZ experts scan and inventory your storage media to create a "catalog" of its content, enabling you to pick and choose the files you want to restore. Often used to determine the scope of a project, this service helps you decide which tapes contain data that might be relevant for electronic discovery purposes. Relevance can be determined by time frame, data type, or the existence of a custodian.

Media Restoration

Restoring files from backup media is time-consuming process that most customers simply don't have the resources, and often times capabilities, to complete themselves. ZANTAZ fully removes this burden from the customer - having invested millions of dollars in a state-of-the-art restoration infrastructure so that customers' IT resources and dollars may be allocated to core line-of-business projects.

The ZANTAZ team of restorations experts has a proven track record for rapid turn-around, responsiveness and complete adherence to chain-of-custody and data security requirements, processing over 150,000 tapes a year from a wide variety of current and legacy systems.

ZANTAZ offers the unique capability of restoring data to a variety of locations including:

  • ZANTAZ Enterprise Archive Solution (EAS) repository on-site or hosted
  • ZANTAZ Digital Safe repository - hosted
  • Short-term Digital Safe repository - hosted
  • Standard disk or storage device (ftp, CD/DVD)

The restoration of backup media to a ZANTAZ location enables your team of investigators to conduct audits and eDiscovery immediately upon restoration, without the need to manage data transportation, and loading into a new system, reducing costs and improving response times.

Proactive companies will recognize the value of having all electronically stored information (ESI) available on a single platform capable of enforcing uniform records management and eDiscovery requirements across the full data set regardless of original source, file format or language. ZANTAZ utilizes the IDOL technology platform to create an information index that utilizes complex digital patterns - that are independent of traditional silos created by source, fixed metadata, format and language. This results in a highly secure access methodology that is addressable by any IDOL enabled client - including the full suite of ZANTAZ Electronic Data Discovery and compliance monitoring modules.

Data Migration

IT Managers are concerned with the rising cost of maintaining aging storage systems and the increasing risk of hardware failure in these systems. Do they maintain expensive service and maintenance contracts or should they migrate the information to a low risk cost effective solution with unlimited capacity and scalability?

At the same time, in-house legal teams are concerned with the risk posed by disparate application of records management policies and the potential risk and cost of an audit or eDiscovery requirement across multiple storage and archive systems. They look to IT to provide a solution.

The ZANTAZ family addresses each concern in a cost effective manner, providing a complete package to migrate your data from its current location to the ZANTAZ consolidated archive. The ZANTAZ hosted archive, available in Digital Safe and EAS On-Demand, offers the best long term value by eliminating the cost and risk associated with aging storage devices and providing unlimited on-demand capacity for both legacy and live data archiving.

Migrated data is automatically:

  • De-duplicated
  • Indexed using IDOL technology
  • Classified, and enriched with new/updated metadata
  • Assign a retention period in accordance with corporate policies
  • Available for audit and eDiscovery requests

The breakeven point for a proactive media migration project can occur within the first year; this is achieved by eliminating ad-hoc migrations/restorations, administration, and back-ups costs, along with the termination of expensive service and maintenance contracts or repurposing of the legacy system hardware.
