Tape Cataloging

Does your organization know what information is on all of its backup tapes? Can your IT group restore critical data from them within a few days for an eDiscovery or compliance audit? With the December 2006 amendment to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) Rule 26b Section 2b, chances are information on those tapes can no longer be claimed "not reasonably accessible because of undue burden or cost." For most organizations, restoring data from backup media is an extremely expensive and time-consuming process that becomes a significant burden on IT resources, especially when the volume of information is large needs to be turned around quickly. Just to gain access to information on backup media, IT must recreate the technical environment—including the same email system, hardware configuration, and version of backup software-that was used in the original backup process.
